The King, Queen, Prince, and Princess of Internet Marketing
What’s up Lot Lizards! In this wonderful, amazing, fabulous, extraordinary post I am going to share with you the King, the Queen, the Prince, and the Princess of Internet Marketing. And no, I’m NOT talking about:
- Jeremy Schoemaker (The King)
- Ann Handley (The Queen)
- John Chow (The Prince)
- Matt Cutts (The Princess) <—– Yeh, I just went there!
Instead, what I am talking about is what I call the 4 C’s of Internet Marketing
The King, Queen, Prince, and Princess (The 4 C’s of Internet Marketing)
Let’s start with the 4 C’s of internet marketing. They are, in no particular order:
- Conversions
- Consistency
- Conversation
- Content
I bet you can’t guess which one of these is King…
Content is King
Still today, with all the information that is out there “on-the-line”, internet marketers are falling short of producing content that is phenominal. That’s right, I said phenominal. It no longer works to be just AVERAGE in an era full of NOISE.
You HAVE to be able to break through the mediocracy threshold, grab your reader’s attention, kiss them on the lips, slap them on the ass, and then carry them through the next 1,000 words of your blog post.
People want to be entertained! They want to feel a connection. The last thing we need is another blog with shitty top 10 lists and how to articles that a middle schooler could have created.
So how do we create this phenominal content? The first thing to do is to find something you’re passionate about. If all you’re trying to do is make money online and you’re not even writing in a field that you love, you’re going to get left by the waste side.
Secondly, you have to write (or record videos/podcasts/etc) like you’re talking to someone you know and love. When I’m writing these blog posts, a lot of the time I imagine writing it for my best friend (yes, we actually talk this way to eachother). The only caution I give you is to make sure the person you’re writing to also fits your target market. You don’t want to be writing to your girlfriend when you are trying to sell men’s clothing.
Lastly, you have to get into STATE! That just means that you are in a good state, with good energy, and feeling good. If your feeling like a sack of dog dicks and you try to write a compelling blog post, good luck getting anyone to read and connect with you. BUT, if you just came home from the gym, or banged your wife, or took a bump of blow, then you’re probably gonna write a kick ass blog post. [Note to self: Invest in some Cocaine]
Conversation is Queen
So let’s say you’ve got the content thing down pat. That’s great! The next “C” you need to work on is Conversation (also communication and connection…same shit). This is the second most important part of Internet Marketing.
Now my women readers might be thinking, “The Queen is MOST important, not the King”. Listen, it’s an article about internet marketing, go back to the kitchen and make me a sandwich. 😉 In all seriousness, for the sake of the article, let’s assume the hierchy goes King, Queen, Prince, Princess, in terms of most important to a little less important. Even though all four are VERY important. You get the idea!
But seriously, nobody wants to be talked at. They want to connect with. If you’re an authority in your niche (because you put out great content) people feel like they relate to you, that’s why they leave a comment. If you never respond to their comment, no big deal, I’m sure they won’t hate you for that. BUT, imagine if you did respond to their comment. AND, not only did you respond, but you responded quickly and appropriately.
Imagine you’re that person leaving that comment and you may have a question. What if the person who wrote the blog post that you just read (and loved) replied right back with an answer and told you how awesome you were for commenting. You’d feel good and probably think, “this guy is a cool dude”. Not to mention you’d probably comment again. The conversation has started!
Now you’re getting more activity on your blog, your time on site is increasing, and you are CONNECTING with people in a genuwine way that will make them want to come back to your site all the time (and possibly buy stuff from you)!
It’s a win/win situation and really takes less time than you think. For example I have this app on my phone called YouTube Studio. So every time someone leaves a comment on a video of mine, I can pull it right up on my phone and comment like it’s a text message. I get dozens of comments a day and if I’m on top of my game that day, I’ll have a few conversations going on YouTube.
If you connect, you win!
Consistency is Prince
As a former professional baseball player, I can tell you that consistency is key to success. As a matter of fact, everyone of my players (I’m a coach now) knows that our motto is “consistency is key”. In a game where the smallest amount in change of a percentage can mean the difference between a good season and a bad season, to be consistent is a MUST.
The same goes for internet marketing. In today’s world you have to stay visible to stay relevant. Just think about the psycology of most people these days. Gone are the days when musicians and actors were the hugest stars. Now-a-days it is the people who can stay in the headlines the most who are most famous and some of them are just normal people. For example, Miley Cyrus seems less popular than Kim Khardashian. That’s because Kim is on TV on a weekly basis.
Your blog is the same way. If you build a following but then stop posting for a few months, you may lose a lot of the loyal followers you have. People are quick to jump ship these days and want the NEWEST stuff. You have to make sure that you are always providing that new and FRESH content.
Not to mention, Google also gives priority to freshness. That means a newer blog post (all things equal) may get a higher ranking than an older blog post. So make sure you keep pumping them out.
That doesn’t mean you have to pump out an article everyday. The point is to stay consistent. If your “happy spot” is 3 articles a week, then try to stay consistent with that. If it’s one a week, then make sure you post at least once a week.
One way to make sure you stay consistent is to compile a back log of content. When I shoot videos for my one site I’ll usually try to pump out 3 or 4 in the same day. One time I shot 12 videos in a day and just kept changing shirts to make it look like it was different days. On that site I like to post 4 times a week so in one day I got 3 weeks worth of work it. That’s the easiest way to stay consistent.
Conversions are Princess
Most internet marketers skip these first 3 steps and go straight to trying to make money. They start thinking, “how can I get my list to convert to sales”. That’s great and all, and I’m sure it works in some cases, but that is not a long term business plan because you’ve got to keep throwing money at it to keep the wheels turning. Not to mention you’re working with shrunken margins.
Conversions are like the Princess of internet marketing because they demand your attention, they throw a fit if you’re not doing something right, and it’s all about money.
I’m not going to lie, I’m bad at this one. I’m in the process of getting better though. What I do a good job of is enticing people to join my newsletters, but I fall short in tracking my conversions from there.
What I should be doing (and am starting to move that way for some of my sites) is split testing everything. I’m not talking just an A/B split test. I think you need to test, retest, and then test some more. You can’t go wrong with understanding what works best when it comes to conversion.
The more conversions you make, the more money you make. This is where you need to leave your artistic nature at the door and get analytical. That is, if you want to make the most money you can from your efforts!
In Conclusion
Obviously there is a lot more involved when it comes to internet marketing, but of course my job in this blog was to get you to read this far. If you are reading this, then I did step 1 well enough. If you decide to leave a comment (please do), then I guess you’ll see how good at #2 I am. For #3, well, you’ll have to tune in tomorrow to find out more. And #4, don’t forget to join my newsletter! Oh, you know what we didn’t talk about?….SHARE ME!
Great guide! When the 4 C’s are working in harmony then you can create an empire that will last and feed your family for years!
